Her image and aggressive and athletic dance moves, like doing push-ups, contribute to her lyrics showing that women don’t have to be weak and helpless and run by a man to be successful and beautiful. This fights against society’s image of a beautiful woman, showing that you can be beautiful without looking like Brittany Spears. Stefani also defies the typical 90’s pop princess image with her choice of clothing, such as her sweat pants and top that reveals her stomach but not a massive amount of cleavage, her pale skin, pale blonde hair, and her big read lips. This idea is then defied when the men start going through the ceiling to go into the women’s room so that all the men and women can dance and jam together. Also, it shows the stereotype that “boys don’t play with girls”. First of all, No Doubt having a female lead singer is a rarity in itself within the rock industry, so separating the band into a men’s room and women’s room shows the division of gender in the band and glorifies Stefani’s role in a strong, positive light. Showing not only a separation of men and women, but a separation of the stereotypical activities that each gender performs within a bathroom. Throughout the video, it shows men using the urinals and women checking their makeup. The video transitions to a building where all of the men start jamming with their instruments in a dark, dirty men’s room, and Stefani is singing and dancing alone, with the exception of two female workers, in a bright, decorated women’s room. The song’s tone sounds happy and as though Stefani is singing about being proud to be “just a girl”, but the underlying meaning displayed through the lyrics shows that she is sick of being treated like “just a girl” and is trying to make a statement that she is an independent woman. This fits in with the tone and meaning of the song. Her body language transformed to show a strong, independent woman ideal. The video then moves into the band members in the car, and Stefani is kicking and punching in the back seat. Her body language shows a very childish girl ideal. Gwen Stefani, the female lead singer, is shown leaning on her car with her feet pointed inwards.

The music video starts out with the band, mostly men, packing up into their cars to get ready for a show. I’m just a girl, all pretty and petite, so don’t let me have any rights!” (Dumont and Stefani, 1995). “’Cause I’m just a girl, little ‘ol me, don’t let me out of your sight. It’s a statement of creating a positive self-image as a female in our society. This song deals with stereotypes that are created from gender role and sexism issues. This song is “an anthem for young women who want to break out from the common stereotype.” (Banegas, 2010). “Just A Girl” by No Doubt positively influenced me during my adolescence.
